So, Your Company’s Growing? How to Hire the Right People.

Are you looking to grow your sales force?  Hopefully, the answer to that question is yes.  The success of hiring the right candidate has everything to do with your company’s hiring process.  We believe that 60% of success in business is having GREAT people, 20% Hard work, and the other 20% is having a good plan set in place.  But, have you ever hired too flippantly because you needed to fill your immediate need, resulting in regret and money lost?  A CEO friend mine told me this and I’ll never forget it, “Hire slow, fire fast.”
How to hire the right person

“Get the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right seats.” -Jim Collins

Jim Collin’s quote from Good to Great is now famous.  Yet it is not easy to accomplish.  Just how do company leaders do this right?  It’s all about hiring the right people.   If you don’t, the price is steep.  So, how do you hire the right people? First step is to begin finding the right candidate.  You can do that by targeting your competition, ask existing staff, networking, social media, traditional media, associations, and even relying on headhunters.

Next, have the candidate take a personality/behavior assessment.  The DISC is the most popular in hiring sales people, but why use it?  With the DISC, you can:

  • get an understanding of candidate’s work style
  • identify specific talents and behaviors
  • identify ideal work environment
  • provide manager with keys to motivating and managing
  • identify areas for improvement
DISC Hiring

Hiring right is vital.

Lastly, you’ve identified the candidate’s strengths and behavior style, now it’s time to interview the candidate.  Begin by handing them their completed DISC assessment, and ask if it’s truly them.  Next, have a prepared list of interview questions.  Below are some samples of recommended interview questions:

  • What would be the perfect role for you?
  • Who was your best boss? Why?
  • How do you organize your priorities?  What tools do you use to help?
  • Who has been the most influential person in your life?  Why?
  • What is your greatest skill/asset you would bring to the organization?
